Alter- To make a small or partial change to something, keeping its original identity or function.

"We need to alter the plan a tad. " 

Convert: To change something completely so that it serves a different function or takes on a new form.

"He converted the attic  into a home office." (A complete transformation)

adapt vs  adjust 

 

  Adapt = A bigger, more fundamental change to fit a new situation, a broader, often long-term transformation.

 

  Adjust = A smaller, more specific change to improve something, a minor or temporary change.
